Truckee Memorial Day ceremonies were well-done

The recent Memorial Day ceremonies at the Truckee Cemetery made us feel proud to be part of the Truckee community and its united recognition of our military service personnel.

This year was the first time we have attended this event, which attracted about 150 people. The cemetery was beautiful, with American flags placed on all veteransand#8217; graves.

The honor guard and speakers paid respectful tribute to those who served our country, and the Mountain Belles sang an especially moving rendition of and#8220;Amazing Grace.and#8221;

We would like to thank the cemetery board members for all the special touches that made us feel at home, such as the beautiful roses handed to attendees, the lovely programs, and the reception afterward that allowed veterans, organizers, speakers, and community members to share some memories together.

Truckee is our second home, and we find occasions like this one as reminders why we enjoy the town so much. It is our understanding that this Saturday (June 23, 10 a.m.) the cemetery board again will host another free community event, the dedication of several headstones of Civil War veterans at the cemetery.

The tireless research of Chaun Mortier, the boardand#8217;s archivist, helped make this event possible. We encourage local residents to attend, since this is sure to be another wonderful tribute.
