Martis Creek volunteer appreciation

A big thank you to Mike Dunsford for once again volunteering to keep our poop bags stocked through the busy winter at Martis Creek Lake. Mike goes above and beyond by also walking the road with his bucket, cleaning up after those who wonand#8217;t and keeping the road a pleasant place to walk. Mike, the and#8220;poopmeisterand#8221; remains dedicated to this not always pleasant job year after year and we really appreciate his time and effort!

Thank yous also to Ann McBride and Patty Evans for being the caretakers of the areaand#8217;s mountain bluebirds. Patty and Ann maintain bluebird boxes from Northstar to Russell Valley. They move the boxes when the squirrels get in, and keep counts on the Martis bluebirds year after year. Our bluebird population has thrived with their efforts.

Volunteers are the backbone of our community, thank you!

Safe and sober thanks

Thank you to the entire community of Truckee and Lake Tahoe for their enormous support of this yearand#8217;s Class of 2012 annual Fashion Show. This major fundraiser to support a Safe and Sober Grad Night would not be possible year after year if it were not for the welcoming arms and generous donations of local businesses that donated food, supplies, printing services, audio, visual and lighting expertise, radio time, press coverage, raffle and silent auction prizes, and of course the actual clothes to model. Also thank you to all the parents and students who worked so many hours to produce an everlasting high school memory.

Skiing for Schools raises more than $52,000

The Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation would like to thank the participating ski resorts and community for their support in another successful Skiing for Schools season. Despite a challenging snow year, the program raised more than $52,000 for the Foundationand#8217;s grants programs. The continued support of our ski area partners: Alpine Meadows, Homewood Resort, Northstar, Royal Gorge, Squaw Valley USA, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Cross Country and Tahoe Donner make this program possible. On select winter dates the resorts donated special tickets to the Foundation to sell at a discounted rate. All proceeds go to Excellence in Education.

Excellence in Education would also like to extend a special thanks to Porters Sports and Alpenglow who serve as ticket outlets for the benefit days. The Foundation hopes the community recognizes the generosity of these companies and their commitment to improving our community through enhanced education.

Purple Party a success

If you missed The Purple Party at Zanoand#8217;s, you missed what Truckee is all about. On behalf of the American Cancer Societyand#8217;s Relay For Life of Truckee Tahoe, I would like to thank all of the party goers who attended our kick off for this yearand#8217;s Relay. Tim and Diana, owners of Zanoand#8217;s Family Italian and Pizzaria, once again opened their door for the third year to welcome close to 175 participants. The food was absolutely amazing, and I would like to extend a big thanks to the entire Zanoand#8217;s staff for their hard work that night, but especially Timbo and Diana. A party isnand#8217;t a party without The Deckheads and unofficially, the Purple Party band.

Pete Nevin and the boys in the band have a way to get you moving and put a smile on your face. We are so fortunate to have such talent in our community, and a band so willing to support our cause. Relay teams donated raffle prizes in a drawing that was loads of fun.

All of the proceeds from this event will go to this yearand#8217;s sixth Relay For Life, which will be held on July 14-15, at the Truckee High School soccer field. We encourage all of the community to support this event, as well as RibFest, a must for Fatherand#8217;s Day, June 17, at Tri-Counties Bank Plaza, noon-4. There will be ribs, rods, and rock nand#8217; roll. In closing, I want to extend my own thanks to our Relay committee, Purple Party planners, Relay captains and team members, and all of you who have supported our Relay in past years. May we find a cure someday.
