Surveying a vision

After voters had their say in November by electing three candidates supported by the Community Airport Restoration Effort, local residents will again be able to voice their opinions about the Truckee Tahoe Airport District. Thanks in large part to the three new members of the five-person board, the airport has hired a firm to conduct a survey of more than 500 district residents. The results will help airport managers create a new vision statement and business plan. We’re sure there are more than a few people out there who think spending $35,000 on such a survey is a bad idea. But we’d also venture a guess that those are the same people who cast their votes on the losing side of the election. Like it or not, it is good to see candidates’ campaign rhetoric turn into action. Too often once earnest words and promises fly out the window when a candidate takes office.Yes, the airport election was one of the most contested – and contentious – campaigns the Truckee area has seen. But the three candidates, supported by a grassroots group focused on lessening airport noise, managing airport growth and promoting community involvement, obviously hit a nerve in the community by promising big changes in how the board operates. What has to happen now is a truly unbiased effort to gauge what residents of the airport district really think. Anything less will only produce a vision statement that is about as clear as mud.So if in early fall you receive a call asking for a few minutes of your time to discuss airport issues, say yes, even if your airport candidate lost. Because the more input that is received, the clearer the vision will be.
