Tahoe Cityand#8217;s fall youth sports leagues benefit children

Special to the Sun

TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212; Fall season brings a variety of activities including the start of many youth-based sports. With eager anticipation, children from across the country look forward to playing with their team.

A few local examples are Tahoe City Public Utilities District junior basketball league, North Tahoe Youth football and AYSO soccer.

Participating in youth leagues has a number of benefits for children, first and foremost is in the area of personal health. Children who regularly exercise and play sports can battle obesity and promote overall physical well-being.

From 1980 to 2008, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports obesity among our youth (6-11 years) has doubled and has tripled among adolescents (12-19 years). Obesity occurs when caloric intake exceeds energy used to burn calories. So rather than going to the gym, children can join a team, hit the field or court and burn off those calories.

Another advantage of team sports is that it can promote social interaction, build self esteem and help children relate to others. Even toddlers can learn from sports such as the TCPUD Little Lakers program. Through this program they learn social skills and are introduced to organized activities before they are in school. The program is held once a week in four-week increments and covers a variety of sports.

As a parent looking to have your child participate in sports activities here are some tips.

and#8226; Talk to your child and find out what areas in which they are interested and explore the opportunities at your local parks and recreation.

and#8226; Visit the teams/programs , talk to the coaches, see the facility, the equipment and how the program is run.

and#8226; Talk to other parents who have been in the program before and get their feedback.

and#8226; Consider the time commitment and financial cost. Make sure the entire family supports the activity and there is no hidden cost to participating.

In the end make sure it is what the child really wants to do and that it will be a fun and positive experience.
