Musicians in a five-piece brass band will perform a concert in Truckee Saturday evening after reaching out to local school children.

The Great Basin Brass Quintet will play an eclectic selection for the public at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Tahoe Truckee High School Auditorium.

Before their public concert, the five-piece band will visit four Tahoe-Truckee district schools and conduct a musical workshop for 200 students. The musicians play trumpets, trombone, tuba and French horn.

The quintet will visit Tahoe Truckee High School, North Tahoe High and middle schools and Alder creek Middle school.

The Tahoe Mountain Resort Foundation has underwritten most of the two-day event, which will cost about $8,000, according to outreach chairman Domenic Favero.

The school visits are designed to not only acquaint students with the music and the instruments that make it, but with the artists who play professionally.

“The outreach portions are a combination of narrative and musical performance,” Favero said.

The workshop gives local music students an opportunity for a private lesson with a professional, according to organizer Rita Whitaker-Haun.

Focusing on all brass instruments is a first for the festival, said Whitaker-Haun.

“Some [students] never get to hear brass instruments ” when they get a chance to, that is priceless,” said Whitaker-Haun.

Most of the players from Great Basin Brass are members of the Reno Philharmonic, and some play for the Reno Jazz Festival. They will play a wide variety of music from renaissance to pop, according to trumpet player Larry Engstrom.

Refreshments and snacks will be served following the concert.

Festival organizers estimate 2,500 students will be exposed to the music outreach program this weekend.

The Lake Tahoe Music Festival is a nonprofit entity that has provided local outreach to schools since 2002.

Tickets are $25 for adults, kids are free. For tickets and more information call 581-1184.
