Tahoe Rim Trail Association announces ‘Thru Hike’ and ‘Segment Hiking’ programs

Special to the Sun

TAHOE, Calif. – Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for its Annual Thru Hike or Segment Hiking Program on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Create your own personal story on this 15-day backpacking trip or enjoy hiking a different segment of the trail on Wednesdays or Saturdays this summer. Will you be the next participant to add your story?

Gary’s experience on the Thru Hike was life changing- he proposed to his now wife half way through the hike. He’s now a TRTA volunteer guide, and helps to inspire others to get outdoors and have fun.

Jim thought this might be has last trail experience, after battling with prostate cancer. After completing the Thru Hike, he now has a renewed passion for life and has joined our team of volunteer guides.

Dave was a surfer, kayaker, writer and photographer. After suffering a stroke and brain surgery, his next life changing event was the TRTA Thru Hike.

Kristine shared the experience of hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail on the Segment Hiking Program with her daughter in 2010. It was a special experience for them, and now they enjoy hiking all over the Sierra Nevada. Kristine is now an enthusiastic guide for the TRTA.

Tim enjoyed the Segment Hiking Program so much in 2010 that he signed up for a second round in 2011! He eagerly participates in many of our public hikes because of his experience on the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Will 2012 be your year? Sign up now for the TRTA Annual Thru Hike, which will occur twice in 2012, Aug. 4-18 and Sept. 8-22. This is a unique opportunity to do a “supported” 15-day backpacking trip on the Tahoe Rim Trail , with two groups of 12 participants. Each group will have three to four experienced guides and remarkable views along the way. Please visit http://www.tahoerimtrail.org to learn more and to register. This experience is not for first time backpackers.

If backpacking is not your thing than consider hiking with the Wednesday or Saturday Segment Hiking Program in 2012. The Wednesday group will take an extra week or two to hike the trail in smaller segments at a slightly gentler pace. The Saturday group will tackle one of the eight TRT segments each week. Desolation Wilderness will be divided into two day hikes, and will add a ninth segment to the calendar. For more details visit http://www.tahoerimtrail.org

Space is limited! Registration is now available online for both programs at http://www.tahoerimtrail.org. For more information or questions please call Jaime Souza at 775-298-0231 or email jaimes@tahoerimtrail.org.
