Food and wine lovers unite at the 33rd annual An Elegant Affair Friday, Nov. 20, 6:30-9 p.m., at the Boatworks Mall in Tahoe City, with the event benefiting the North Tahoe Booster Club. Attendees enjoy fine wines and brews, hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Tickets are $60 per person or $110 a couple. For more information call 530-583-4929.
Truckee State Preschool is having their Sixth annual Tamale Sale Nov. 23 and 24. Proceeds will, once again, go to Mother Teresa’s Orphanage in Honduras, the Flying Doctors of Truckee, Truckee Senior Services and a local family. The tamales are handmade by parents and volunteers. They freeze beautifully for later or are a unique alternative to the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner. Special appearance by teen author Ellen Hopkins, Nov. 20, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Ellen Hopkins, author of popular young adult books and#8220;Tricks,and#8221; and#8220;Identical,and#8221; and#8220;Glass,and#8221; and#8220;Impulse,and#8221; and#8220;Burnedand#8221; and and#8220;Crank,and#8221; visits to discuss the writing process and autograph copies of her sometimes-controversial books. On Saturday, Nov. 21, Sugar Bowl Resort will be abuzz with backcountry enthusiasts, powder hounds and those just up for a good time, to celebrate the opening of the new Backcountry Adventure Center at Sugar Bowl. A collaboration between Sugar Bowl, Alpine Skills International and The Backcountry, the Backcountry Ball will be an evening of dining and music, filled with educational presentations from the Sierra Avalanche Center, slide shows from the region’s top photographers, gear exhibits from industry outfitters, and tours of the new Center itself. Tickets are $15 and will be available for purchase at Truckee-based The Backcountry. Tickets will include dinner, one entry into the evening’s raffle giveaways and the opportunity to purchase 2009/10 Sugar Bowl lift tickets at a special discounted rate, all benefiting the Sierra Avalanche Center and their avalanche forecasting cause.
Project MANA’s annual Thanksgiving distribution for families in need will take place Saturday, Nov. 22. Last year, 431 households were able to provide a Thanksgiving meal for their families, thanks to the generosity of our community. Because of the economy MANA is expecting to serve more families this year. Distributions in Truckee, Incline Village and Kings Beach include a frozen turkey and all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Every year the Tahoe City Rotary hosts a and#8220;Santa’s Sledding Partyand#8221; for the children of the entire North Shore at Granlibakken Resort Dec. 13 from noon to 4 p.m. All children from pre-school to 9 years and their parents are invited. Santa will arrive by Tahoe City fire truck, led by the North Tahoe High School jazz band. Mr. Claus will give out wrapped presents to each child, sleds are provided by Granlibakken, followed by hot dogs, cookies and drinks, donated by Save Mart in Tahoe City and Safe Way in Kings Beach.

Celebrating 30 years, Coldwell Banker Incline Village Realty and the US Marine Corps Reserve sponsor the and#8220;kick offand#8221; for this yearand#8217;s Toys For Tots from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at The Chateau. The evening will include music by DJ Alex and#8220;Boogieand#8221; Smith, dancing lots of raffle prizes. Money raised will help buy warm winter clothing for local families in need. Admission is one new unwrapped toy.
