Tahoe-Truckee Faith Factor: Delight yourself
Special to the Sun
and#8220;Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart,and#8221; Psalm 37:4.
A lot of my Christian life, I took this verse and primarily looked at and#8220;He will give you the desires of your heart.and#8221; I thought if I did everything I was supposed to, He would give me everything I wanted. When all my wishes werenand#8217;t granted, I was thoroughly disappointed.
Do you ever find yourself disappointed with God? Look back. What are the intentions of your desires? Is it for your glorification or satisfaction, self indulgence or is Jesus your desire? Most of us would respond, Jesus, of course. But what do your actions say? I have come to truly know intentions are rendered useless if action does not follow.
Do you crave Jesus? Do you yearn to spend time with Him and be lead by the Holy Spirit? C.S. Lewis wrote in a sermon, The Weight of Glory: and#8220;Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised within the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.and#8221;
We are offered an awe-filled life and we settle for so little. We are presented a life filled with miracles. John 14:12 says, and#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.and#8221; Do you hear that Christian? Jesus made the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk, the sick healed, the dead live.
If we truly abide with Christ we will do greater works, He says. Wow. We are offered a life of infinite love. 1 John 3:1 says, and#8220;See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are.and#8221; We are considered Godand#8217;s children. Think about the relationship a child has with itand#8217;s father: He is completely dependent for every need and every desire. and#8220;Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him.and#8221; (Matthew 7:9-11).
Do you desire Him? Do you long for your Savior? The One who has redeemed you? The One who has given you a true identity? and#8220;But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel, and#8216;Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!and#8217;and#8221; (Isaiah 43:1). He calls you His own. Delight yourself, my brother and sister. Do not let the snares of this life keep you from truly living. I beg you, O dear believer, do not be easily pleased. Seek pleasure with resolve and passion. Seek pleasure in Jesus Christ and#8212; no ulterior motives, no secret agenda and#8212; humble yourself before Him, understanding your utter need for Him and take delight in Him. This is what you were created for.
For in this, in this desiring God, He is pleased also. He finds much glory and joy in our loving Him. Love on Him today. Humans were meant (and always will) seek out their pleasure, so if youand#8217;re not finding it in Him, go find your pleasure somewhere else; because, if youand#8217;re not loving Him, experiencing pleasure in Him, and delighting yourself in His glory, youand#8217;re merely pretending to know Someone you donand#8217;t. He is not a genie who brings forth treasure to grant a wish and#8212; He is our treasure.
