Tahoe-Truckee Ki Gong practitioners attend international clinic
Special to the Sun
Six local Ki Gong practitioners recently attended the semi-annual international Ki Gong clinic held near Monterey, Calif. The oldest attendee, Ted Macklin, age 88, of Tahoe City, was advanced to Level III, Intermediate Instructor. Steve Forest, also of Tahoe City, was advanced to Level IV, Advanced Intermediate Instructor.
Rick Kannisto has been practicing Ki Gong for only a few months and experienced many benefits in mind, body and spirit. This led him to attend the Clinic. He was impressed with the and#8220;jam packedand#8221; learnings, starting at 6 a.m. and continuing till 11 p.m. The concept of and#8220;energyand#8221; struck him most deeply. That which is present in everything, every where. Energy in the Universe, energy in the Earth and in all things, living and non living. He was awed this energy can be used for health and healing of self and others. Finally, that we as humans are energy systems.
KI (Chi/Qi) means energy: The energy in all things living and non living. Gong means work or practice. Thus, Ki Gong is the practice of working with energy; bringing into our bodies, energy, keeping the energy channels of the body clear so that energy may flow without obstruction and moving our energy with the mind. We learn to clear out negative energy and bring in positive energy. The practice also significantly enhances the immune system and increases our sense of well-being.
Energy is brought into the body and moved throughout the body to create a balance. Over the past several thousand years many sequences of movements have been developed to accomplish the goals of Ki Gong. Most are accomplished in coordination with deep breathing techniques. As in Tai Chi (a derivative of Ki Gong) the movements are done very slowly with deep inhalations and exhalations.
The forms practiced are gentle and nonimpactful. Students with physical issues complete the forms while sitting in a chair. Over time, the flow of energy is experienced quite strongly. In the short term after an hour of practice one experiences a clear sense of ease and relaxation while at the same time feeling energized. The sense of ease and well-being lingers throughout the day.
Specifically, the practice of Ki Gong includes specific series of movements which generate and move energy and keep the energy channels of the body open and free of blockages. It includes coordinated and focused deep breathing. While in the process of coordinated breathing with specific movements one experiences a deep sense of relaxation; a meditative state. Finally, and very importantly, all practices are done with a smile. Please note how your energy changes from that of a serious attitude to one of a smile.
