TAHOE/TRUCKEE and#8212; On Friday Sept. 21, thousands of organizations and millions of people around the globe will observe International Peace Day. The International Peace Day movement began more than 20 years ago and is based on the vision of independent documentary filmmaker Jeremy Gilley. The movement has gained significant momentum during the last decade. Gilleyand#8217;s organization and#8220;Peace One Dayand#8221; was the inspiration for the and#8220;Truckee Tahoe Peace Project.and#8221;

Founded in 2011, The Truckee Tahoe Peace Project (TTPP) was started by a collaborative of individuals, organizations and businesses dedicated to promoting peace. The group advocates for peace within, peace at home and peace in the broader community.

In recognition of International Peace Day, TTPP is excited to announce the 2nd Truckee Tahoe Peace Day Celebration in the Truckee Regional Park. This family community event includes music, raffles, entertainment and exhibits for all ages. Here children will have the opportunity to participate in creative activities. Children and adults alike may rock out to great music by local musician Emily Tessmer and her band. Kindly sponsored by Carmen Carr, Emily will entertain along with performances by the Sierra Expeditionary Learning School chorus, Glenshire Elementary and InnerRhythms Dance Theatre. Whether itand#8217;s playing in the labyrinth, hoola hooping, getting your face painted or contributing to the community peace poem, there is no shortage of activities based around the central theme of peace. Also, visit the Truckee Community Garden and connect with local nonprofits who do so much to make our wonderful community what it is.

Truckee Tahoe Peace award

Also bringing our focus to peace and International Peace Day will be a special presentation of the very first Truckee Tahoe Peace Award. This award was created by the TTPP to publicly recognize, commend and thank the individual who best represents the spirit of peace in our community through their thoughts and actions. This is the first award of its kind in our community and the winner will be selected by the public who will nominate the individual they consider best qualifies. The person with the most nominations will receive the award. This is exciting news for our community. Make your nomination online at http://www.truckeetahoepeaceproject.org.
