TAHOE/TRUCKEE and#8212; In 1989, U.S. Congress passed legislation for the first time addressing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The movement to and#8220;break the silenceand#8221; started years prior, but continues to this day.

Although public awareness of domestic violence has at times taken the spotlight in the media and public discussion, for many it is still a hush, hush personal matter. However, the consequences of domestic violence permeate well beyond the individuals in those relationships; they affect all of us. Healthcare costs, poor student academics and loss of productivity at work are just a few of the community costs. Domestic violence is not a relationship or family problem anymore: It is a community problem. And it is one that occurs in Tahoe every day.

Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services invites you to join the movement to end domestic violence in our homes, our neighborhoods and our towns. Help us commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month by participating in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Oct. 16, registration at noon, walk at 1 p.m. in the Incline Village Center.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes will begin in front of Dress the Part(y), 774 Mays Blvd., Incline Village, Nev. Men, women and children are invited to participate and day-of registrants are welcome. Registration is $15 for adults, $10 for students and $50 for teams of four. In addition, participants can purchase fuzzy slippers to wear for $50. High heels in all sizes will also be available.
