A few things need to be clarified in regard to Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal Company’s proposal to increase garbage collection rates.

First of all, it is the disposal company’s proposal, not Truckee’s. TTSD brought empirical evidence before the town council in support of its request for increased fees.

The main crux of the company’s argument: Truckee produces 21.5 percent of all residential refuse that TTSD collects, and yet our town pays less for service than other neighboring jurisdictions generating smaller amounts of waste.

And even if the proposed rate structure is approved, Truckee residents will still pay lower rates than neighboring communities.

One fault of the proposal, however, lies in its timing. TTSD hopes to have the new rate structure in place by July 1. As tonight’s council meeting includes the first official public hearing on the matter, town councilmembers, as well as Truckee residents, should have been afforded more time to discuss an issue that could raise garbage rates as much as 68 percent each month.

The issue, however, still seems straightforward. The cost to supply the service has surpassed the revenues it generates. Blame it on inflation or call it a cost-of-living adjustment, but it is getting expensive to pick up garbage and haul it to Nevada.

Here’s an idea: save some of that coveted can space by recycling and maybe your fees won’t increase.

An older friend I made when I began here in 2016 called the other day to talk about the paper. I hadn’t heard from her in awhile and, well, I’ve been here just long enough…
