Teacher of the Week: Sherry Hollomon

Truckee Elementary

I always wanted to be a teacher but I had a really long path getting here. When I went to college I was discouraged because people were telling me that there were already too many people looking for teaching degrees. So I went into recreation instead so that I could still work with children, but it was more administrative. So finally I went back to school and got my teaching credentials.

When I envisioned myself working with children, it was always younger ones. If circumstances had been different, I think I would have enjoyed working with (older children) also.

I really think that children learn best when they’re having fun and they don’t even know it’s hard work. I try to do a lot of teaching through games and activities, not just through text books.

Putting on plays. Traditionally at Thanksgiving we do “Turkeys go on Strike.” The plays are musicals that are curriculum based, so there is a lot of education in there, plus they are humorous to the parents enjoy them too.
