Teen outreach program hits Tahoe
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; SOS Outreach is reaching out from coast to coast, inspiring young people to make positive decisions for successful lives. SOS promotes its core values of courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom and compassion through year-round outdoor activities. SOS expanded from Colorado to the West Coast, with an office in Seattle and now Lake Tahoe. The nonprofit also plans to open an office in Jupiter, Fla., extending its reach nationwide.
and#8220;We are very excited to be expanding our organization to create a full-time presence in the Lake Tahoe area,and#8221; said Lake Tahoe program manager Justin Behravesh. The office is located at the Parasol Building, 948 Incline Way, Incline Village, Nev.
SOS plans to work with more than 200 young people in the region, representing an increase of 400 percent from 2009, when the outreach group ran its Tahoe basin programs from a remote office. Alpine Meadows, Boreal Mountain Resort, Heavenly Lake Tahoe, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area have chipped in with resources to make SOS Outreach programs possible on their slopes.
One pro snowboarder, who is no stranger to the Sierra, welcomed SOS to her native West Coast.

SOS works with more than 5,000 underserved youth internationally each year, inspiring them to make positive decisions for successful lives through year-round outdoor activities such as snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, stand-up paddle boarding, hiking, backpacking and camping. Arn Menconi founded SOS in the Vail Valley of Colorado in 1993.
SOS Outreach has been providing quality outdoors programs to underserved youth for over 16 years,and#8221; Menconi said. and#8220;We have proven results that our programming methods are effective in increasing resiliency in youth with risk factors in their lives. Our organization is expansion into the Tahoe region is very exciting for us, and we look forward to creating long-term partnerships with youth agencies and mountain resorts in the region.
