Thank you for helping to build our community

By Lisa DobeyToday’s topic is writing thank you notes. Don’t get your ski poles in a twist, I’m the one writing the thank you note.At the end of each year, Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, with the Sierra Sun and Tahoe World, hosts a fund raising drive called Gifts for Good. It’s an easy way to make one donation and have it benefit a wide-range of nonprofit organizations in our region. Thanks to full-time and part-time locals, Gifts for Good raised over $130,000 to benefit charitable activities in our region. Even in the midst of holiday chaos, charity prevailed. It has been the most incredible of years. Throughout it all, and with your help, TTCF continued to support nonprofit organizations whose missions include eradicating hunger and domestic violence, strengthening our environment and access to recreation, and promoting a well-rounded community through arts, education, and civic involvement. Giving away money is not easy. In the coming months, there will surely be new issues that capture our attention. TTCF will be here to fulfill its responsibility of responding to issues, whether they be new or long-standing. The definition of philanthropy is, after all, a love of humankind.Your gifts sustain the work of many nonprofit organizations. In a very real way, you are responsible for building community. I went to one of those touchy-feely seminars a few years ago. One exercise stuck with me: “Look around the room and look at all these faces. Think of the most important person in this room and elevate yourself to his/her level. Think of the least important person in this room and elevate that person to your level as an equal.” With this exercise, we were encouraged to get a glimpse of a group that values the worth and experiences of each person. That connection may be fleeting, but once you experience it, you keep looking for it. It’s like writing thank you notes. Don’t you long to find a friendly note among all the bills and junk mail you receive? Each year at TTCF’s anniversary party, I ask guests to raise glasses in toast: “As we go forward this year, let us recognize all the good works and deeds by those around us, let us never forget those who need our help, and always remember that we are better together.”Thank you for your philanthropy in giving to Gifts for Good. We are better together. Lisa Dobey is CEO of Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation. She can be reached at 587-1776 or

Don Rogers: Big news hits close to home

First, thank you for the quick notes, some so quick that the breaking news we’d been sold had barely made it online. I read a handful of well-wishes, what’s-going-on, you-OK emails and texts while still…
