About The and#8220;Yand#8221; Foundation

The and#8220;Yand#8221; Foundation was established in memory of Katy Zirbel whose passion was writing and asking the abiding question of her life, and#8220;Why?and#8221; Most of Katyand#8217;s writing was a response to her curiosities and her creative process included long walks, hikes and time spent skiing in the Truckee Tahoe region, a place where she sought and often found simple answers within the elements of nature.

Katyand#8217;s own wordsand#8230;

I thought of an art project the other day. I thought of creating Katyand#8217;s Why Wall. A large wall, preferably where millions can see it and on this wall I would adhere tree branches all shaped like Ys. Thousands and thousands of Y-shaped tree branches nicely shellacked to bring out the wood grain and preserve their integrity. Thousands and thousands of and#8220;Ysand#8221; just plastered to a wall or maybe even a billboard on the side of Highway 80. People would drive by and say, and#8220;Iand#8217;ve asked myself that same questionand#8221; because its meaning would be implicit. No explanation necessary. Just simply Y.

The Foundation, comprised of friends, family and fans of Katy, honors and supports writers from the Truckee Tahoe region. The goal is to provide scholarships to Katyand#8217;s alma mater, Goddard College, and other noteworthy schools and organizations in support of creative writing.

Submissions should be mailed to The and#8220;Yand#8221; Foundation, P.O. Box 296, Truckee, CA 96160.
