The right man for the job…

Sometimes it’s good to shake things up at a public agency; to get fresh leaders in with new ideas.

This is not one of those times.

Truckee Town Manager Steve Wright made what appears to be the right decision this week, replacing outgoing Truckee Police Chief Dan Boon with current Cmdr. Scott Berry.

Not only does Berry bring a distinguished career in law enforcement that spans almost 30 years, he brings something the approximately 20 other applicants couldn’t: local knowledge.

In just under three years, Berry has helped develop the department into a valuable asset of our relatively new town. He has tendered a philosophy of community involvement among its officers, and instituted a training regimen sure to pay off in the long run.

Part of the reason he was brought on originally in the number two spot was his enthusiasm and people skills. Over the past two and a half years he has followed through, extending the hand of the department into the community, and seeking counsel with Truckee residents in development of department policy.

He is also a community activist in his personal time, which helps him understand Truckee in a way that goes beyond the badge.

Dan Boon has been a great leader – establishing the department, and getting it to function smoothly in an amazingly short period. We look forward to Scott Berry’s tenure, hopeful that the department will continue to grow in a positive way under his watch.
