The season of giving
With Christmas now about a month away we often get caught up in the buzz of the holidays – family, kids, vacation and the general holiday cheer. With 28 days until Christmas Eve, we often get caught up in the rush to buy those presents and make plans. In fact, you’re probably reading this on the day after Thanksgiving, traditionally the heaviest shopping day of the year. But as yesterday was a day to give thanks for the wonderful things in our lives, the upcoming holiday season is also a time to remember – along with all the fun and stress – those in our community who need a little help. For those folks, stress may stem from the fact that they are out of work and their children will likely go without gifts. And it may not just be going without toys. Warm clothes and sturdy winter footwear shouldn’t be luxuries. This is where you come in. There are plenty of opportunities in this community to make a difference. There’s Truckee Community Christmas – a program that benefits seniors and families in need with gifts and food for the holidays. There’s the Gifts for Good Campaign – in which the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation will turn your donations over to worthy local organizations. There are lots of wonderful opportunities to give in this community, but these programs don’t happen on their own; they need your help. Drop off a toy at your local real estate office. Place some canned goods in the bins at the grocery store. Give that winter coat you haven’t worn but a few winter days. (There are more ideas, just look at page A7.)Even though many of us think that there are plenty of organizations in the community that are providing for those folks in need, the goods have to come from some place. And that is us – all of us.We know you’re busy – maybe even stressed – but plan ahead to give this holiday season to someone who might need your help.
