Time for thanks, time for giving: Time for Gifts for Good

Anne Grogan

Another Tahoe summer has rolled by, day turns to night a lot earlier now, Thanksgiving is tomorrow and Christmas will seemingly arrive immediately after. Its inevitable. On Thanksgiving, many of us will express gratitude for the way this community has provided in times of need. Tahoe-Truckee always gives of itself. And in giving, Tahoe-Truckee truly is one united community coming together to help one of its own. As we enter the season of giving this year, many will enter with solemn intention, for 2007 hasnt been the easiest of years, especially for those up here affected by war, by fire, by the economy, or in a less-tragic context, by the fact that it seems like every new toy is laden with harmful lead and is likely destined to be recalled. This year, giving will be more difficult for many because a lot of people have resolved to put more thought and intention into the gifts they give to loved ones. Again this year, the Sierra Sun, the Tahoe World and the Truckee-Tahoe Community Foundation are partnering in the Gifts for Good campaign, a program designed for those with a philanthropic spirit to direct donations for the benefit of others; a program dedicated to help direct those donations to those who truly will benefit from the philanthropy of others. Now in its sixth year, Gifts for Good has raised $509,416.23 for local nonprofits and organizations. For donations in which a particular recipient has not been specified, funding has been distributed by the community foundation through a grant process. Donations to the Gifts for Good campaign at any level make a difference, because even $5, when added to the collective donations of others, can make someone in or outside this community, a little, or a lot, less solemn this year. In the coming weeks, the Sierra Sun will feature some of those organizations or individuals who have benefited in the past from Gifts for Good. Together, as a community, we can create more reasons for all of us to give thanks this holiday season. Anne Grogan is directing the Sierra Suns coverage of this years Gifts for Good campaign.
