TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; To help residents manage vegetative waste, the Town of Truckee is expanding its free fire safety yard waste drop-off program.

From June 1-16, Town of Truckee residents may drop off up to 6 yards (approximately 40 bags) of vegetative material for free at the Eastern Regional Landfill. The Eastern Regional Landfill is located at 900 Cabin Creek Road and is open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., closed Sundays.

In order to participate, you must live within the Town limits and be able to prove residency. Simply show a photo ID with your physical Truckee address or present an out-of-town photo ID with a utility bill when you arrive to ERL. You do not need any additional paperwork such as a coupon or voucher to participate.

At ERL, be prepared to unload your own yard waste. If yard waste is transported in bags, you will be required to empty the bags to take advantage of free disposal. When transporting loose material in a trailer or pickup please tarp your load to prevent fly-away.

Multiple trips are permitted. There will not be in-Town drop-off locations as in previous years.

Accepted items are pine needles and cones; lawn trimmings; garden waste; twigs, limbs and branches; wood chips, bark and brush. No food waste, pet waste, rocks or dirt.

and#8220;We are hoping that the new drop-off program provides residents greater access to recycle green waste materials. We understand that the one day event presented a scheduling challenge for many residents and second homeowners. We hope that by providing a greater time frame for residents to drop off material participation will increase and we will capture additional tons of yard waste material that if left alone may increase local fire danger,and#8221; said Nichole Dorr, Town of Truckee recycling coordinator

In addition to the expanded drop-off program, Green Bags for yard waste continue to be accepted weekly. Curbside collection of Green Bags is limited to four tied green bags per week. Green bags are available at Mountain Hardware, Tahoe Supply Company and the Tahoe Donner HOA Clubhouse. and#8220;We hope to encourage residents to take advantage of both the and#8216;free passand#8217; and Green Bag program to assist in the creation and maintenance of defensible space. Truckee Fire and CalFire both are an excellent resource for residents looking for additional information on preparing their properties for wildfire,and#8221; said Dorr.
