TRUCKEE and#8212; On National Train Day 2010, The Truckee Donner Railroad Society opened the Truckee Railroad Museum. It has become a popular attraction for Downtown Truckee. More than 6,000 visitors, including locals and tourists from around the world, have enjoyed the displays to date. As part of Truckeeand#8217;s participation in National Train Day 2011, Saturday May 7, the Society is hosting a First Anniversary party. The town is invited to join in the festivities at the museum downtown next to the train depot. The Truckee High School Jazz Band will entertain beginning at 9:45 a.m. with the program beginning at 10 a.m.

The museum is the first step in the societyand#8217;s plan to build a significant railroad museum for Truckee. Housed in a Southern Pacific caboose, it provides an introduction to Truckeeand#8217;s rich railroad history. The envisioned museum, to be located in the Railyard redevelopment, will tell the history in full and feature year-round displays of historic railroad equipment. Open weekends, holidays and Truckee Thursdays during the summer, admission to the museum is free but donations are encouraged.

This is the fourth year recognizing National Train Day in Truckee. Sponsored by Amtrak, local celebrations are held in communities across the country to bring attention to railroads and rail travel and to highlight their role in America today.
