Truckee family launches clothing company, gives back to community

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Local artist Sara Zimmerman with her husband and daughter, Rob and Cali are proud to launch Laughing Sun Clothing, a Truckee-based, family-owned business that specializes in hand-drawn illustrations on t-shirts and decals. and#8220;I have had numerous art shows where people said they loved the art, but didnand#8217;t have an art budget due to the tight economy,and#8221; says mixed media artist Sara Zimmerman. and#8220;Rob and I decided that by bringing my art onto clothing, people could afford to own some artwork and get dressed at the same time.and#8221; Co-owner and sales manager Rob Zimmerman adds, and#8220;When we were formulating the idea of our business, we kept trying to come up with a way we could give back to our global community. We decided that with each shirt purchase, we will donate $1 or more to nonprofits, thereby helping people get art, get dressed and give back, all with one purchase.and#8221; Laughing Sun Clothing (and#8220;Wearable Art that Gives Backand#8221;) will primarily be a web-based company that will launch its online store at with three initial designs donating to three different nonprofits after July 19.

The Zimmermans are a family of outdoors-enthusiasts and spend much of their free time together in the mountains; rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, swimming in the lakes and rivers during perfect Sierra summers; snowshoeing, sledding, and snowboarding through the epic Tahoe winters. Their shirt designs reflect their passion for the outdoors and its effect on Saraand#8217;s inspiration for her art.

Sara Zimmerman is a life-long artist and finds inspiration in everything around her. She has been particularly inspired by her late Grandmother, oil painter and former Associated Press courtroom artist, Rosalie Ritz. Sara received her BA from UC Santa Cruz in Environmental Studies with an emphasis on science interpretation through art.

Each shirt design is associated with a nonprofit organization that Rob and Sara feel provides a meaningful service to the community and is somehow, at least loosely, associated with the design of the shirt.

They choose their shirts based on the feel of the fabric and the quality of the cut and manufacturing.
