Truckee generosity has been overwhelming
Having spent seven years with a regional newspaper, I had not had the opportunity to see what a single community is capable of during the holidays.
Truckee showed me the way.
Over the past nine weeks the newspaper has been a partner with the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation and the Tahoe World in the “Gifts for Good” program. The program was intended to provide a platform for monetary giving, large and small, creating a fund that can then be accessed through a grant process by local non-profit and service organizations. Gifts for Good was designed to fill the gaps.
I am so pleased to report that it will accomplish that… and more.
Thanks to local giving, the fund stands at nearly $30,000. Nine or ten local entities will be assisted because of the generous giving.
The generosity didn’t stop there. I stood in the doorway of our empty unit next door and looked at a sea of toys for children.
The Truckee Community Christmas, with the Soroptomists, gathered barrels of toys for area children this year. It was an awesome thing to see bag after bag of donated toys loaded onto trucks destined for sorting, wrapping and ultimately, to local children’s homes.
The warm coat drive, food drive and Adopt-A-Senior programs, I’m told, were equally successful and inspiring.
While, the efforts of a few benefit many, it’s not a total cure, and needs will continue year-round. But for the holiday at least, a little cheer, warmth and happiness were brought into numerous lives, including mine.
It’s a pleasure be part of such a giving community.
Thank you Truckee.
