Truckee High Band shines, talent show and winter concert announced

Special to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Gifted musicians from Truckee High School Band recently participated in the 29th Region V Honor Band series of workshops. Select students from eight high schools gathered at North Tahoe High School on Nov. 16 and 17 to participate in the event. High schools from Chester, Indian Valley, Lassen, Portola, Quincy, North Tahoe, Truckee, Greenville, and Westwood were represented and participated in instructional workshops under the tutelage of their high school directors.

The weekend culminated in a concert on Saturday afternoon directed by the acclaimed Dr. Royce S. Tevis. Tevis, whose career spans 30 years, has earned national recognition for quality performances of both high school and university bands under his direction. Currently as the director of University Bands at California State University, Chico, he conducts the wind ensemble, the symphonic band and guides all aspects of the University band program.

Talented Truckee High musicians again participated in the Nov. 29 and 30 at the Sierra College High School Honor Band in Rocklin, Calif. In order to be considered students had to turn in audition CDs of solo performances. Eight students were accepted to participate.

The nonprofit organization, Truckee Excellence in Music Parents’ Organization, TEMPO High, was established in 1995. Its main goal is to support the Truckee High School Band Program, and whose fundraising efforts allow band students to participate in honor bands, workshops and the spring band tour. But they can’t do it alone.
