TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Spouting knowledge about everything from current events to popular culture, the Truckee High School Academic Team brought home the hardware this year in Nevada East-West Academic Team competition.

According to coach Janice Polochko, the nine-member team lost only two games this season, was undefeated in regionals and came in second in state competition.

and#8220;The questions cover subjects the students learn in school and things they might know by chance,and#8221; said Polochko. and#8220;Itand#8217;s a lot of fun; kind of like jeopardy. This is a great group of kids to work with.and#8221;

Six students play at one time with two schools facing off. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Each round consists of 70 questions.

The Northern Nevada league consists of Dayton, Yerington, Lovelock, ROP, Fernley, North Tahoe and Silver Springs. While the competition demands a certain level of broad-based knowledge, there is still plenty of room for amusement said senior team member Annika Deurlington.

and#8220;A-team is so fun because and#8212; unlike most competitive activities and#8212; it is all about not taking yourself too seriously,and#8221; Deurlington said. and#8220;Also, itand#8217;s a super group of people who can both tell jokes and intelligently discuss current events en route to the heart of Nevada.and#8221;
