Truckee Library can help with New Year’s resolutions
Truckee Children's Services Librarian
For those of you inclined toward making a new year’s resolution or two, the Truckee Library is a perfect place to do your homework. Whether you want to revamp your diet or exercise routine organize your household, learn a new language, or any number of other worthy pursuits, the library will likely have something to help you along your path.
The Zone, Atkins, Fiber35, Eat Right 4 Your Type, Sugar Busters, Fiber35, French Women Don’t Get Fat, and diet and fitness books by Jillian Michaels, Jorge Cruise and Suzanne Somers and the like can be found on the 18 feet of shelving space devoted to diet and fitness books.
For those who prefer a more interactive approach to exercise, there are instruction DVDs and videos for yoga, pilates, tai chi, and qigong. An equal amount of shelf space is devoted to cookbooks of all kinds, if your year-beginning pursuits are more culinary in nature.
For those of us who yearn for a clutter-free household after the holidays, books about organization and clutter reduction abound. Titles such as Organizing From the Inside Out, Let Go of Clutter, and Confessions of the Happily Organized Family help ease the transition between seasons. One of my all-time favorites in this genre is Sink Reflections: FlyLady’s Babystep Guide to Overcoming CHAOS. (The acronym CHAOS stands for Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome.)
Help with learning a new language is also available at the library, with plenty of books, cassette tapes and CDs devoted to the subject. There is wide selection in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese and Japanese, but more esoteric languages are also represented, such as Norwegian, Czech, Russian, Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew. Berlitz even has a Learn Spanish with Batman in comic book format.
Perhaps your new year’s resolution involves learning a new skill. The library is a treasure trove of do-it-yourself instructional books and videos on everything from learning a new instrument to re-tiling your bathroom.
To nurture your inner artist, check out the books on drawing, crafting and writing. If 2010 is the year to make your dream of becoming your own boss a reality, be sure to consult our how to start a small business section.
Finally, if your new year’s resolution is to simply slow down and read books, watch movies and listen to music, we’ve got you covered! Happy 2010 from the Truckee Library!
