Truckee Relay for Life: Why we walk

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; We so often say, and#8220;My, time is going fast, or Where did the time go?and#8221; and those are exactly my feelings as I realize that the fourth Relay for Life is just a month away. When I was asked to put on paper why I walk in the Relay, I struggled to find the words which would express all the emotions I have about the word and disease: cancer.

I walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society. I believe that ACS wisely spends their dollars to promote cancer awareness, healthy life styles, and medial research. Over the years they have contributed greatly to create treatments which have made a difference for a number of patients. And, it is a lot more fun to walk with friends and neighbors than to sit at a desk and write a check.

I also walk in memory of, and in spirit with my husband, family and friends who have lost the fight. I walk in honor of all of us who are survivors. Itand#8217;s a joy to celebrate another cancer free year. I walk with hope for and in support of those who are fighting the difficult battle. I wish that they are in the survivor group next year.

The Relay for Life is July 17 and 18 at SMECC (the old Middle School). Opening ceremonies are at 9 a.m. Saturday, and closing ceremonies are 9 a.m. Sunday. Sponsored teams walk for 24 hours, because cancer never sleeps.

If you would like to build a team, or support a team call (530) 320-6982 or e-mail RelayforLife.org/TruckeeCA.
