Truckee Rotarians collecting cash donations for Haiti disaster relief

TRUCKEE and#8212; The Rotary Club of Truckee is accepting monetary donations to provide emergency disaster relief supplies to Haiti.

Through the international organization ShelterBox, Truckee Rotarians will send much needed emergency shelter, cooking supplies and other basic survival necessities to the victims of Haiti.

and#8220;The need in Haiti is huge. Current estimates are that there are over a million people who have lost their homes,and#8221; said ShelterBox Founder and CEO Tom Henderson. and#8220;We continue to rely on the support of volunteers and donors to allow us to help them in the days and weeks to come.and#8221;

Conceived and developed by Henderson, a member of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall District in England, the ShelterBox project has provided shelter for approximately 500,000 people in 40 countries over the last six years. Each box the organization manufactures and distributes provides shelter for an extended family of up to 10 people for a minimum of six months. In addition to a tent, the box contains a cooking stove, blankets, rain gear, cooking utensils and equipment, water containers and purification tablets, a tool kit and childrenand#8217;s items, such as crayons and books.

ShelterBox has set up an operations base in Port au Prince, Haiti, and is working with local Haitian Rotarians to coordinate the distribution of boxes across the country. Truckee Rotarians are supporting the cause by soliciting cash donations from the Truckee Tahoe community to purchase additional boxes for the relief effort.

and#8220;ShelterBox is an extremely worthy cause, working to make an immediate difference in the lives of the Haitian people affected by the disaster,and#8221; said Brian Marsh, Truckee Rotary past president and Haiti Relief Project chair. and#8220;This project is an excellent example of Truckee Rotarians supporting Haitian Rotary clubs and providing direct aid to those most in need. We hope our community will join us in supporting this effort.and#8221;
