Truckee Tahoe Active Adults: We’ve got the meals; we need the wheels

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Sierra Senior Services has added one more thing to its already bustling list of daily things to do – raise money for a new Meals On Wheels delivery car.

“This is a great way for visitors and people in our community to support Meals On Wheels in a very specific way,” said Executive Director Sarah Deardorff. “When people see our delivery cars around town with the Meals On Wheels logo, they can say, ‘Hey, I helped buy that car.’ It’s a satisfying feeling.”

The nonprofit agency needs to raise about $21,000 to purchase a new Subaru or other dependable four-wheel drive vehicle. At the program’s inception in 2002, three cars were donated in used condition. As maintenance costs mount and heavy use deems the cars unreliable, vehicle replacement has become mandatory.

Sierra Senior Services delivers about 24,000 meals annually to eligible seniors and disabled residents who live in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas. Deliveries span both Nevada and Placer Counties. Drivers travel 30 to 50 miles daily, depending on route needs, which vary as eligible recipients change. Two of the three vehicles travel Donner Summit and Brockway Summit daily and often travel on private dirt roads in isolated areas.

Three delivery routes stretch from Floriston to Donner Summit and Truckee on the Nevada County side; from stateline to Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Tahoma on the Placer County side.

Volunteers load their vehicles five days a week at the Sierra Senior Services kitchen, located inside the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments on Estates Drive in Truckee. Fresh hot meals must be delivered within two hours to comply with state guidelines whether there’s sunshine, rain, snow or blizzards.

“It’s amazing to see how happy people are when they see we’re at their door,” says Debbie Turner, Meals On Wheels coordinator. “Oftentimes, we’re the only person they come in contact with for the entire day. It really makes you feel like you’re doing something good.” Turner manages an all-volunteer staff of 20 drivers and is always looking for volunteer drivers to add to her list.
