Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation: An idea worth celebrating

Friends, we have reason to celebrate! You bring the balloons and I’ll bring the champagne: Our region has a successful community foundation. All month long, the Sierra Sun and Tahoe World have been running coupons asking you to donate to Gifts for Good – Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation’s one stop “locals helping locals” campaign. Last year permanent and part-time locals donated over $80,000 to support nonprofit organizations in our region. So lift your glasses to celebrate an organization that is providing for the current and future needs of all of us and for generations to come. There are 650 community foundations in the United States established to accept and hold assets to support a specific geographic area. Aren’t we lucky that one exists right here in North Tahoe? Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, like every other community foundation, accepts contributions of all sizes. Most of these are placed in permanent endowments; then year after year after year, grants are awarded from these endowments at the request of the donor or under the direction of TTCF’s board.Ready to celebrate yet? The power of Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation to provide for a better quality of life for North Tahoe grows with each passing year. As more people understand the unique ability of a community foundation to accumulate assets to support local issues, the foundation grows. And as the foundation grows, so grow the grants given back to the community. Each year. Forever.Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation has assets of nearly $8 million in 80 separate charitable funds, each generating grants that follow the donor’s wishes. And it gets even better! Residents tell us they have arranged to leave charitable bequests to TTCF. We know of gifts totaling more than $18 million – and those are just the ones we know about.Since 1998, TTCF has stewarded nearly $5.5 million in grants to a wide range of non-profit organizations and programs. Grants help keep the environment clean, support our schools, offer scholarships, promote the arts, and help provide food, shelter, and clothing to those with greatest need. More than 170 organizations have received grants, touching virtually every permanent resident, part time resident, and visitor in North Tahoe. There is no other organization, either public or private, whose sole mission is to provide for the future of our community. TTCF is a success today, quietly giving much needed support to outstanding non-profit organizations. A growing understanding of the role philanthropy can play and the generosity of residents guarantees Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation is here to stay and will be of ever-greater importance in keeping this a wonderful place to live. A gift to Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation truly is the gift that keeps on giving.Giving to Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, whether through Gifts for Good, a donor advised fund, or through a bequest is a way to support our community today and leave our collective legacy to create a better tomorrow. So, we may not organize parades down Donner Pass Road and North Lake Tahoe Blvd to celebrate, but if you listen closely, you can almost hear future generations cheering.Lisa Dobey is President of Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation and can be reached at 530-587-1776 or She thanks Bob Potter of Centre County Community Foundation in Pennsylvania for help with this article.
