Truckee River Winery is announcing their bocce courts are open to the public and the Spring Bocce League is starting soon. This tournament will be a double elimination tournament where each team will play at least twice and with one loss, teams can still make it to the championships. Games will be 2-12 point rounds, with a 6-point tie breaker (if necessary). There will be two league nights, Mondays and Wednesdays, starting at 5:30 p.m. Each league night will have a max of 12 teams. Mike Welch, a 17-year veteran NCAA college head volleyball coach and two-time USA Youth National Team Head Coach, will lead three Monday night volleyball clinics at Alder Creek Middle School in Truckee. Dr. Mont Hubbard has extensively researched and written on the mechanics of sports. For this special engagement before the Amgen Tour of California, Hubbard will present two research projects involving bicycles currently underway at the UC Davis Sports Biomechanics Laboratory, Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nev., May 12, 5:30 p.m. The first project addresses fundamental questions of balance and rider control. Using special bicycles that have been augmented with scientific instruments and techniques previously used in Aeronautics, researchers at UC Davis are studying how human andamp;#8220;pilotsandamp;#8221; intuitively control bicycles. With the scientific understanding of the mechanics of the bicycle and the limits of the human body, it becomes possible to calculate the andamp;#8220;bestandamp;#8221; way to budget one’s energy during a race. Join Girls on the Run andamp;#8212; Sierras, Sunday, June 5 at 9 a.m. for the New Balance/Girls on the Run 5K and newly added 10K Fun Run, Truckee River View Sports Park, 12200 Joerger Drive, off Soaring Way.
