Submitted to aedgett@sierrasun.comJohn Humphreys will go to the California All State Honor Band Feb. 18, the first Truckee middle school student to make the honor.

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Alder Creek Middle School Student John Humphreys, 14, is the first middle school student from Truckee to successfully audition for the California Band Directors All State Honor Band.

The California Band Directors Association (CBDA) holds its prestigious All State Honor Band Feb. 18, 2012, at the William Saroyan Theater in Fresno, Calif. More than 1,600 California students auditioned. John won the principal bass trombone in the CBDA All State Symphonic Jr. High Honor Band.

John currently performs in the Alder Creek Jazz Band and the Alder Creek Cougar Band. John is also the principal bass trombonist for the Reno Youth Symphony and the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra II. In addition to studying at ACMS in the Jazz and Concert Band, John also studies bass trombone with Don Glattly.

John said, and#8220;Auditioning for the All State Band was my goal. I wanted to become the first kid at the middle school to go to All State. I am so excited that I made it. It is a lot of hard work and the audition was very difficult. The judges have to listen to the best of the best, so my audition had to be perfect. I practice all the time. Practice always wins over talent. Playing in four bands full time keeps me busy with new challenging music. But I am really looking forward to the new music for the All State Band.and#8221;

Music is in Johnand#8217;s future. Currently his long-range goals include an advanced music degree, and then he would like to become a member of the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, or maybe the Vienna Symphony.
