Truckee’s Home Concepts wins three national design awards

The design team at Home Concepts in Truckee were lauded for this Old World influenced kitchen.

Home Concepts, the design resource center of Truckee-Tahoe Lumber Company in Truckee, Calif., recently received top honors from Kitchen and Bath Business (K+BB) for three distinctive Lake Tahoe projects.

and#8220;Projects are judged on aesthetics, how creatively limitations and client requests have been met, functionality and fresh thinking,and#8221; explains K+BB Executive Editor Alice Liao.

The honored projects reflect three very different interpretations of elegant mountain home design. At one end of the spectrum is a European-styled kitchen that captured the K+BB Merit Award.

Overlooking cobalt blue waters, this and#8220;castle on the lakeand#8221; was inspired by French chateaux. The homeand#8217;s owner, an avid antique collector, worked closely with Home Conceptsand#8217; designers Ruth Cross and Marcio Decker on the award-winning kitchen design. and#8220;It was an ideal partnership,and#8221; Cross noted.

The goal of the project was to visually tie the kitchen to the rest of the home, which is complimented by a vast selection of antiques. In keeping with this design ethos, rich, furniture-quality kitchen cabinetry was painstakingly custom crafted by Homestead Cabinetry.

According to K+BB publication, the focal point of the space is a majestic hood and backsplash that reflects the clientand#8217;s love of ancient coats-of-arms and traditional fleur-de-lis insignia. The kitchen is punctuated by many Old World details including pewter and copper tiles, dome liners, mosaics and clavos.

and#8220;In both kitchens and bathrooms (award submissions) we look for things like visually appealing composition, a cohesive design, a creative use of materials and innovative thinking,and#8221; Liao, K+BB executive editor adds. and#8220;Safety, functionality and a good layout are also key.and#8221;

Home Concepts also won a Merit Award for another project that embraced old-time design, but in a totally different era. and#8220;The clients wanted the home and the bathroom to have the feeling of having been there for 80 to 90 years,and#8221; said Marcio Decker, a designer with Home Concepts.

Constructed by Loverde Builders, the redwood-beamed Old Tahoe style bathroom features custom, etched-glass pocket doors between the tub and steam shower. The glass provides privacy as well as a decidedly elegant spin, which is repeated in the windows.

Decker with co-designer Betty Scott of Home Concepts also garnered kudos for a bathroom project that embraced still another design theme. Landing honorable mention, Decker aimed to bring the rustic outside inside with natural materials in their raw forms. Constructed by Paul Griggs, Griggs Custom Homes, the 13 by 20-foot space features warm slate, knotty cabinetry and travertine tiles. A two-sided fireplace serves to connect the master bedroom to the bathroom.

and#8220;The same materials were used to seamlessly join the two spaces, while still giving privacy to the bath located just on the other side of the fireplace wall,and#8221; Decker explained.

In addition to the tile and cabinetry designed through Home Concepts, Marcio Decker and Betty Scott also provided interior design services through Aspen Leaf Interiors for the two bathroom projects.
