Truckee and#8212; Walkers and runners will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society’s Third Annual Relay For Life of Truckee. Sign-ups are underway and sponsorship opportunities are available.

Teams of Truckee residents will gather at the Truckee High School track at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18 through 10 a.m. Sunday, July 19 for a 24-hour relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented team event where participants can walk or run relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can include co-workers, club members, family and friends and have gathered donations prior to the event.

and#8220;A Relay For Life is a unique opportunity for our community to come together in the fight against cancer,and#8221; said Ruth Geresy, event chair. and#8220;Many of the participants are cancer survivors, which serves as a reminder that our community is not immune to this disease and that we can actually help our friends, families and our neighbors that have been touched by cancer,and#8221; Geresy added.

Opening ceremonies, including a lap dedicated to celebrate and honor all survivors, will begin at 10 a.m. on July 18. The public is also invited to attend the luminaria ceremony, which will take place after sundown. To honor the community’s cancer survivors and to commemorate those lost to the disease, survivors will circle the track rimmed with glowing luminaria while the names of survivors and those lost to the disease are read aloud. Luminaria can be purchased at the Truckee Visitors Center, 10065 Donner Pass Road, Truckee or online at or through committee or team members.

Funds raised by Relay For Life will enable the American Cancer Society to support local services for cancer patients and their families. Funds also support critical cancer research and community education.
