TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; Recently six Alder Creek Middle School seventh grade classrooms got their annual dose of possibility from the kit andamp;#8220;Disability to Possibility.andamp;#8221; Executive Director of Turning Point Tahoe, Candace Cable facilitated the week-long program she co-created with Jan Brittain and Lisa Furr. The kit creates understanding and inclusion demonstrating there are always options and possibilities, no matter what happens in our lives. An ACMS student remarked: andamp;#8220;Most people think that their life is over once they have a disability. I thank you for teaching our class that life is just changing, not over.andamp;#8221; The curriculum in the kit meets all the California state standards for the seventh grade using all aspects of disability, the words, technology, sports, laws, sign language, varieties of disability and more to create awareness and expansion of possibilities in the minds of the students. They explore all the aspects of disability with words, visuals and actions with students physically experiencing different disabilities. The students reflect on what the program felt like and how their ideas about disability have been changed creating an informed, empowered and compassionate student. So when they are faced with adversity in their lives they will be ready to adapt.A grant from Excellence in Education made it possible for each ACMS seventh grade classroom to have a kit. Education is the key to creating comfort with the unknown. Disability is surrounded by misconceptions and misunderstanding due to lack of education. The program, Disability to Possibility, dissolves misconceptions creating an informed and empowered population. One ACMS student wrote, andamp;#8220;Thank you for showing us that even though you don’t have a part of your body, you don’t have to let down your dreams, that you are still someone in this tiny world.andamp;#8221; The Disability to Possibility program is not just for schools. It’s for all ages, adults and children alike. Recently Cub Scout Pack 60 in Loyalton enjoyed the program. Leader Jennifer Johnson remarked: andamp;#8220;Our pack has an age range of 6 to 10 years and Candace was able to relate easily and effectively with all of them. I especially like all the hands-on activities the kits has, allowing the kids to experience and explore the world of disability. And they had fun!andamp;#8221; Turning Point Tahoe is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality and standard of living for people that are differently able, or labeled disabled, in the Truckee/Tahoe with recreation and education. Their mission is to change the consciousness of what is possible not only for people that are differently able but for all people using advocacy, education and recreation.
