U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla boat inspections on even months for Tahoe and Topaz

Special to the Sun

TAHOE, Calif. and#8212;As few as seven percent, and certainly no more than 22 percent, of first-time boaters have taken some type of boating safety course. Moreover, fewer, if any, of these people have demonstrated an ability to operate the boat, i.e., on-the-water training.

Another preventable statistic is 89 percent of those who drowned were not wearing a life jacket (PFD). Rick Thomas, Flotilla Commander suggests, and#8220;take the boating course offered every other month, get your boat inspected, and ask one of our Coxswains to go with you on a and#8216;shake-down cruiseand#8217; on your boat.and#8221;

The boating course is a one-day course covering the essentials of boating rules and regulations, current state and federal laws, safety factors, first-aid, navigation and knot tying. It is required if you born on or after Jan. 1, 1983 and boat on interstate waters like Lake Tahoe or Topaz.

Bring the whole family to the class and remember those 28 years old and younger are required by Nevada law to take an approved boating course to be able to legally drive a boat on inter-state waters.

You can bring your boat to class, too. Theyand#8217;ll inspect it and only you will get the results of the inspection.

The 2011 boating classes are held every other even month. For information, call 775-852-5557.
