Until they all come home…
Special to the Sun
TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; This past holiday season, in lieu of a Christmas tree at Truckee dining icon Wagon Train, owners Brian and Siobhan Smart encouraged families of United Statesand#8217; actively serving military to send in pictures of loved ones oversees to hang in their coffee shop. The response was so overwhelming, with pictures arriving from veterans who had served in World War II as well as those on active duty, the Smarts decided to keep hanging the photographs until and#8220;all our troops come home.and#8221; To date, their coffee shop is decorated with dozens of pictures of men and women, young and old, who have given their lives and/or continue to do so, to serving our country.–
and#8220;The first week we started this,and#8221; says Wagon Train owner Siobhan Smart, and#8220;a woman sent a photograph of her son who had lost his life. This tribute wonand#8217;t bring him back, but it will serve as a remembrance and tell his story.and#8221;
Recently, the Smarts have started ordering service flags in steady numbers to hang under the photographs, honoring the service man or womanand#8217;s entire troop. Photographs continue to arrive via mail, email, and Facebook (Wagon Train Coffee Shop), some images showing soldiers holding coffee cups sporting the Wagon Train name and logo.
and#8220;We send the mugs to those who ask and#8212; itand#8217;s the least we can do,and#8221; explains Smart.
To show your respect and love for your hero and#8212; past or present and#8212; stop by Wagon Train at 11080 Donner Pass Road, Downtown Truckee, across from the Depot with his, her or your own photograph to add to the tribute. You can also email your photographs as an attachment (jpeg or Adobe pdf) to firstname.lastname@example.org. Pictures should be no more than 5×7 inches with full name, branch of service and location on the back. Stories accompanying images are welcome, and should also be able to fit on the back of the photograph. Lamination is ideal, but the Smarts will provide it, if needed.-
Said Siobhan Smart, and#8220;It doesnand#8217;t matter if there are 10,000 or 100,000 pictures, weand#8217;ll hang them up, with pride.and#8221;
