Visitors paid the rent during crunch
The skiers are back home and the traffic is back to normal – or as normal as it gets this time of year. I would say the town got the rent paid over the holidays. Even the Park and Rec. center was full. I sure do miss the back street parking area. The new year is under way and the thing I miss the most is my “Far Side” calendar, at least on the snowy days when you couldn’t go out, you had some humor in the day.I didn’t make any New Year’s promises this year, so I haven’t broken any. “It’s the start that stops most people,” anyway. The granddaughters had a ball while they were here. They got to shovel off the deck, the porch, part of the driveway and even helped the neighbor dig out his driveway and thought it was fun. Oh, to be young again.Speaking of snow, have you noticed that the fireplugs get buried? We have one across the street that my wife keeps shoveled out when she can. If us or the other houses catch on fire, we want the water now. It helps the Fire Dept. if the people can help clear the ones around their houses. It only takes a few minutes and makes a big deal if there is a fire.I hear Dave Brennen is still on the sick list. Owen Smith was telling me that his Wife Donna had a tick bite that got into her blood and caused her to pass out, and she broker her foot. She says she did it jumping out of a plane, so humor her as she lost her mom the day after Christmas.Jerry Stresser stopped in town to visit with friends here and then back to Reno to see other friends. The best thing to give your mother is conduct that will make her proud of you.Birthday time: Jan. 13: Tami Borwick; Jan. 14: Tim Groden and Lena Besio Goode; Jan. 17: Diane Haynes; Jan. 22: Patty Shero; Jan. 24: Dave “Old One” Stackpole, Mike Diaz and Andy Breuner; Jan. 25: Ted Owens; Jan. 26: Joanne Rollo and Bill Thomason; Jan. 27: Alexandra Lackey and Marie Schnieder; Jan. 29: Ronnie Brown and Marily Elkins; Jan. 30: Nelson Van Gundy; Jan. 31: Dennis Burrows, Jane Berry, Jim Welsh and Chris Bosco.Anniversaries: Jan. 4: Ron and Patty Florian; Jan. 9: Jack and Mary Davis; Jan. 14: Mark and Julie Kincheloe.Ed Rocca and his wife went down to spend Christmas with their daughter and her family and get out of the snow. Sherry Jewel went to Florida to visit her mother, whom has been sick. She should be back by now so she doesn’t forget how cold weather feels. Not Guy’s fault, but the cafe that George Carter had was called the “Olympic caf” and was in the Mason’s building. George was called “Firecracker” because if he got mad at someone’s order, he locked the door for the day. Jody, the Chinese can’t come back and claim their town, the town was here before they got here.I’ve had a cold, so I haven’t been out of the house much. I’ll leave you with some of the dummies of 2002: AT&T fired president John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Maybe it’s not Walter that lacks intelligence.Police in Oakland spent two hours trying to subdue a gunman who barricaded himself inside his home. After firing tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, “Please come out and give yourself up.”An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different ATM’s, the kidnapper then proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts.A man spoke frantically into a phone, “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!””Is this her first child?” the Doctor asked. “No!” the man shouted. “This is her husband!”Slug Brown is a Truckee resident.
