Volunteer Corner: Heather Tone

Interview by Sierra Countis of the Sierra Sun
Ryan Salm/Sierra SunHeather Tone

I started volunteering with them about two and a half years ago.

I dont calculate it down to the week. Im a member on the board of directors. During a slow time I volunteer 15 to 20 hours a month and from October to March Ill volunteer 30-40 hours.

I just wanted to get involved. Ive always had an interest in women and children. I dont have experiences of violence in my own life, but I have many friends who have. You kind of have to tap into whats important to you. I think you really have to soul search a little. Start small, do little things. You can give money. You can give time.

Well, you know honestly, Im behind the scenes. Im on call for the crisis line. I was never really interested in answering phones. I help in raising money. Theres always a fear (with our budget). We have a pretty big operating budget.

I do feel empowered as a woman. We are empowering other people. Giving the gift of empowerment is pretty incredible. The Suns Sierra Countis interviewed Heather Tone for Volunteer Corner.
