After months of planning, the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe and Truckee Rotary completed the staircase of the Truckee River Legacy Trail.

The Legacy Trail is a community project that will one day link Donner Lake to Glenshire. CATT’s charge was to build a staircase off of the Joerger Drive section just above the Truckee River near River View Sports Park. The staircase will prevent erosion and allow users to negotiate the steep grade down to the river. With donated materials, volunteer labor and some strong coffee, the work began early on Aug. 21. Bob Archer of Genesis Construction led the charge by carefully measuring and placing the first railroad tie before 8 a.m. After that, more and more people showed up to swing sledgehammers, dig, drill, cut and move dirt.

Tillio Olcese of Olcese Construction donated a mini-excavator, three friends and a Bobcat, which made the work move quicker. Olcese’s expertise in maneuvering the excavator was key to completing the project, as the steep grade and narrow trail required great skill. With expected completion at 7 p.m., the volunteers completed the work three hours ahead of schedule.
