Western events keep on tumblin’ through town

To Truckee resident Larry Maurice, cowboy poetry is a way to keep the stories of the west alive and consistent.”Cowboys aren’t dead, you just can’t see them from the highway,” Maurice said.In order to classify spoken words as cowboy poetry, they must follow a set of guidelines. “Cowboy poetry is first of all a story,” Maurice said. “It also has to rhyme. Stories got to be too boring, so cowboys began to make them rhyme to make them more interesting. And thirdly, they have to be moralistic.”Cowboy poetry has been around for ages. Maurice joked Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a heck of a cowboy poet.Maurice performed many of his own original cowboy poems as well as a few written by, ” The world famous poet anonymous. His brother unknown wrote a quite a few good poems as well.”Maurice has performed cowboy poetry for the past 23 years. In 2000 the Academy of Western Artists gave him the Will Rogers Cowboy Award. But Maurice is quick to point out, “Behind every great cowboy is a wife with a good job.”Truckee’s Western Week continues with events and rodeo:Friday, Aug. 8: Rodeo Sponsors Team Penning at 6 p.m. at the Rodeo Ground. The Rodeo Queen will be crowned.Saturday, Aug. 9: Truckee Championship Rodeo at 4 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. The cost is $10 per person; Rodeo Dinner & Dance, 7-11 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. The cost is $15 per person.Sunday, Aug. 10: Truckee Championship Rodeo starts at 1 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. The cost is $10 per person.
