What is naturopathic medicine?

TAHOE/TRUCKEE and#8212; Naturopathic medicine operates on the premise and#8220;when the root cause of disease is properly understood and treated, symptoms disappear and health is restored.and#8221; Naturopathic doctors are clinically trained in both natural and conventional medicine through four years of post-graduate medical school. Naturopathic medicine recognizes your body has an ability to heal itself when all of your bodyand#8217;s natural defenses are strong and fully supported. While conventional medicine is limited to treating mostly with pharmaceuticals and surgery, naturopathy examines the whole body and the individual symptoms you experience beyond a strict diagnosis, and uses a wide variety of non-drug therapies (sometimes in conjunction with conventional medicines) to support your whole body. A naturopathic doctor addresses the fundamental causes of disease and works to heal the whole person through individualized treatment.

There are many factors that lead to disease, and naturopathic doctors understand why people get sick, whether it is for genetic, environmental, diet, or lifestyle imbalance reasons. NDs are experts in preventative and restorative medicine and at determining the specific factors causing your health problems. They partner with you to create a treatment plan that focuses on the root cause of your health concerns, and they guide you with the safest, most effective treatments available. Your ND will work with you toward a longer, healthier life by maximizing your and#8220;whole bodyand#8221; health and reducing reliance on prescription medications.

Naturopathic doctors study many methods of healing and are experts at incorporating non-conventional or traditional therapies with more mainstream medicine. In addition to studying conventional medical practices such as pharmaceuticals and minor surgery, NDs study massage, herbal medicine, Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, energy medicine, and homeopathy, among others. Having this dynamic understanding of what our bodies might want or can use is what makes your naturopathic doctor such an important consult in your true and whole healing process.

Every true naturopathic doctor vows to assist and encourage others to strengthen their health, reduce risks for disease and preserve the health of our planet for ourselves, our families and future generations. Practicing naturopathy in the Tahoe community allows our NDs to really live and breathe their vow to preserve and enjoy our planet, while contributing to the health of an energetic, caring and proactive population.
