TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Like many things in Truckee, they started small, grew increasingly popular and then received a wealth of community support. The former Chasing Shadows Youth Triathlon Club is now launched as the Wild Cherries Junior Triathlon Team thanks to the club’s founder, Sarah Clement, Truckee resident and accomplished triathlete and Kristin Krone, owner of Wild Cherries and Olympic athlete.

The goals of the Wild Cherries Junior Triathlon Team are to connect young people who enjoy, or would like to try, the sport of triathlon; build fundamentals of life lessons and good health; develop confidence and character through commitment, hard work, and sportsmanship and most importantly create an environment where training is safe and fun.

and#8220;While the club attempts to not focus entirely on race results, it is worth bragging that the Junior Triathletes frequently finish in the top three of their age groups and often in the top 20 overall,and#8221; said Clement. and#8220;Also, their competitive drive for success is repeatedly seen in their academic success. One of our female triathletes is a freshman at University of California, Berkeley and one of our high school seniors just got accepted to UC Berkeley for fall 2012. However, his final decision on where to attend college is yet to be determined.and#8221;

The 2012 season kicked off in mid-April, but membership is open until May 15. Membership fee covers the cost of USA Triathlon Club Insurance and USA Triathlon Club dues. Wild Cherries Junior Triathlon Team is USA Triathlon Sanctioned and the club is a 501c3 non-profit. To join, contact Sarah Clement at 415-509-5387 or email swimsarah@yahoo.com.

The club holds three organized group workouts a week, and on non-organized group training days, the triathletes are provided with training plans. They use the training plans to train on their own or with other club members. Coaches and mentors provide skill development and technique as part of the training which helps build efficiency in all three disciplines: swimming, biking and running. The older kids compete in four to five Sprint/Olympic triathlons a season, the younger kids two to three Sprint triathlons a season.

and#8220;Training is really fun with this group. The team is really like an extended family to me, and the successes that I’ve earned have helped me to compete in my academics,and#8221; said Kyle Jorgensen, Truckee High School Senior. and#8220;Anyone who wants to give triathlons a shot, come out and join the family. It’s a blast!and#8221;

Wild Cherries Junior Triathlon Team is coached and mentored solely by community volunteers. Chris Cloyd, manager, Performance Gym in Truckee, is helping this season and introducing a and#8220;gym dayand#8221; for the kids; Pat Matava, Truckee High School cross county running coach, assists with training runs; Matt Yarbrough, an accomplished Xterra Triathlete and triathlete Lynette Mulvihill will both assist as trainers and mentors to the kids.

2012 sponsors

Wild Cherries is the team’s major sponsor.
