Wirth running with the girls
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. – Karen Wirth joined Girls on the Run-Sierras shortly after moving to Lake Tahoe from Colorado. An avid runner and advocate for women’s rights, Karen was eager to get involved with a community organization that empowers girls through running. In spring 2011, she volunteered to mentor a group of girls as a coach at the Rideout Community Center on the West Shore. Although an injury prevented her from running, she volunteered at the Girls on the Run 5K in the fall and attended the GOTR annual fundraiser LUNAFest with husband Andy, Squaw Valley CEO and evening MC. In addition to her passion for the programs, Karen brings both legal and board governance experience to GOTR-S. Karen is a real estate attorney and member of the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe board of directors. Karen joined the board for Girls on the Run-Sierras in March and was voted board chair in August.-
“Having completed a plethora of 10Ks, half marathons, and even one triathlon, I understand the link between self-esteem, accomplishment and athleticism. I believe that Girls on the Run has a long-term positive impact on girls in our community and would like to see that impact continue and expand,” said Wirth.-
Girls on the Run instills self-esteem in third through eighth-grade girls through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training. They are actively recruiting new board members for two year terms starting in January. To learn more about the board of directors or programs, visit http://www.girlsontherunsierras.org.
