Word on the Street: How would you rate the housing market at Tahoe-Truckee?
KINGS BEACH, Calif. — This week’s question: How would you rate the current housing market at Tahoe-Truckee?
Here are answers, as asked Monday in Kings Beach:
Brad Lolli, sushi roller, Kings Beach: “It’s tough to find a place; it’s definitely giving me a hard time lately. I’m trying to move to Tahoe City to get a little closer to Squaw for work, and it’s almost impossible to find a place these days.”
Jessica Mullen, bartender, Tahoe Vista: “I think that year-round housing is getting pushed out right now; that Airbnb and VRBO is taking over. So there are needs for jobs that we can’t fill because we can’t find housing for people in the area. It hurts.”
Hamish Gowans, handyman, Kings Beach: “We have a place that we’ve had leased for two years now, but every year we’re worried that the rent is going to take a huge jump or we’re going to lose the place because it’s going to be turned into a vacation rental or something like that. And we know from talking to other people and from doing our own searches that it’s a really challenging place to find a place to live — and to buy in is also just as challenging — for people who are trying to make their living here. The jobs here don’t provide enough income to live here, and a lot of us who live here feel it’s not fair; it doesn’t create a very good community of people who are making the culture and our place unique; (they) are the ones that are being squeezed out.”
Lora Stonebraker, homemaker, Tahoe Vista: “The prices are extremely high and the availability is very low. I would say in terms of buying … we bought three years ago. We were able to get a pretty good deal — those deals aren’t there now.”
