TRUCKEE, Calif. – The Nevada Wing of the Civil Air Patrol will once again participate in the annual “Wreaths Across America” program with observances in Fernley, Las Vegas and Winnemucca, Nev. This event honors our nation’s fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen. Taking place at locations throughout the United States, including the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev., the ceremonies begin simultaneously at all locations Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at 9 a.m.
The Wreaths Across America story began more than 16 years ago when Worcester Wreath Company, a for-profit commercial business from Harrington, Maine, began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery.
Spurred by the tremendous outpouring of letters and interest, and to celebrate the over 15 years of giving, Worcester Wreath Company solicited assistance from the Civil Air Patrol and other civic-minded groups to help expand the efforts of the Arlington Wreath Project with Wreaths Across America – the placing of memorial wreaths during a special ceremony at each of the more than 230 state and national cemeteries and Veterans monuments across the country.
Members of the CAP, the American Legion, active duty service members, and veterans from Northern Nevada will render honors at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev. The Cadets of the Nevada Wing of the Civil Air Patrol will also provide a color guard for the ceremony that includes ceremonial wreaths for personnel who served the United States, the State of Nevada, all military services, POW’s and MIA’s. The ceremony concludes with a bugler playing “Taps.”
The event is made possible with the support of Wreaths Across America, volunteers from the Nevada Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, American Legion, Nevada Office of Veterans Services and the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial.
