2010 Olympics Watch: Mancuso leads Americans in 25th in World Cup GS

U.S. Ski Team report

MARIBOR, Slovenia (Jan. 16) – Two-time defending overall champion Lindsey Vonn was challenging for a podium result until going out near the finish line of her second run Saturday in an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom won by Austrian Kathrin Zettel.

Julia Mancuso of Squaw Valley was the top-placing American in 25th.

and#8220;It happens,and#8221; said womenand#8217;s alpine head coach Jim Tracy. and#8220;Unfortunately, sheand#8217;s had her fair share of it, and enoughand#8217;s enough now.and#8221;

Vonn, who had failed to reach the final run of her previous three giant slaloms, charged to a second-place first run that positioned the 2010 overall leader to bid for her first-ever World Cup podium in the discipline. She made a mistake early in her second run, going up on one ski, then recovered and skied aggressively to make up time before hitting a bump and going off course late.

and#8220;I just hit a rut,and#8221; she said. and#8220;I couldnand#8217;t really see anything. Iand#8217;m just so mad.and#8221;

A day after she said Vonnand#8217;s 112-point World Cup overall lead was insurmountable because of the preponderance of speed events remaining, Germanyand#8217;s Maria Riesch took second and closed the gap to 32.

and#8220;We know that sheand#8217;s got podium potential in every single event that she enters,and#8221; Tracy said. and#8220;Sheand#8217;s had that confidence, she just hasnand#8217;t been consistent.and#8221;

In Sundayand#8217;s slalom, Zettel won for the second consecutive day, while the U.S. Ski Team was unable to land a finalist in the final slalom before the U.S. Team is announced Jan. 25.
