While their elders competed for coveted spots on the Far West Junior Nordic National Team, more than 30 young Far West athletes battled for respective titles in the inaugural U-14 Cup Series this winter.

The U-14 Cup was designed for athletes 12 and 13 years old who are on the track for greatness in future Junior Nationals, but aren’t quite old enough yet.

The series featured seven races throughout the season, and competitors gained points from their best five out of the seven.

Races included the Holiday Sprints, Snowshoe Thompson, and President’s Cup at Auburn Ski Club, the Sierra Skogsloppet at Tahoe Donner XC, and the Allan Bard Memorial Classic at Tamarack Lodge in Mammoth Lakes.

The series concluded this past weekend with the Bjornloppet races. Far West Nordic took 20 athletes and four coaches down to Bear Valley for the two races — a 10K Skate and 5K Classic event.

In the end Kili Lehmkuhl of Tahoe XC claimed the girls title with two wins and two runner-up finishes, while Bjorn Halvorsen of Auburn Ski Club won the boys division with four wins and a second place.

Second place went to Frances Hamilton (Sugar Bowl Academy) and Phoenix Sanchez (Tahoe XC), with the third-place honors going to Lily Murnane (Tahoe XC) and Cooper Honeywell (Tahoe XC).
