3A All-State football, soccer | Bolton, Decker earn highest awards

Truckee football and soccer players were rewarded thoroughly in 3A All-State voting, highlighted by senior quarterback Ben Bolton and senior midfielder Kelsi Decker earning MVP honors in their respective sports.

Senior linebacker and fullback Morgan Nevin was voted Defensive MVP in football while his coach, Bob Shaffer, again was voted Coach of the Year. It was the third-straight year that a Truckee linebacker was named Defensive MVP (Jackson Weed in 2009 and Ryan Macken in 2008).

Lowry running back Jace Billingsley was voted Offensive MVP and Lowry’s Will Thacker was voted Lineman MVP.



In girls’ soccer voting, Truckee senior midfielder Kelsi Decker was named 3A MVP, and on the boys’ side, senior forward Michael Brixey was voted Offensive Player of the Year.

Ali Palacios of South Tahoe was named Offensive Player of the Year in girls’ soccer, Deirdre Lowry of Boulder City was the Defensive Player of the Year, and Chris DeLeon of South Tahoe was Coach of the Year.



South Tahoe forward Cody Williams was voted boys’ soccer MVP, while Sammy Martinez of South Tahoe was Defensive Player of the Year and Frank Avila of Sparks was Coach of the Year.

For the Lakers, senior Kelsey Wittels was voted to the girls’ All-State second team.

The All-State awards are voted on by the coaches whose teams advanced to their respective state tournaments.
