A whole new climb

Lara Mullin, Sierra Sun

While outdoor rock climbing and bouldering options abound in the Tahoe/Truckee area, there are few places to work up a sweat indoors.

Two weeks ago, one of the best local hideouts for bouldering enthusiasts got a face lift – complete with new angles, increased climbing area and a splash of color.

The Sports Exchange climbing gym in Truckee on West River Street sits quietly behind racks of outdoor clothing, skiing, biking and climbing gear and a unusually large selection of discs for golf. The large room is divided into two areas for grabbing and pulling your body from the ground to the ceiling and back down again.

After eight years in existence, Sports Exchange manager Stuart Emerson and the gym’s loyal patrons decided the area needed some changes. A little orange and yellow paint, some new overhangs and three weeks of hard work by employees and local climbers cut out the dead space that existed in the old set-up, and produced an entirely new climbing experience.

Juxtaposed with the old room, the redesigned area is more colorful and offers new and challenging angles to tackle.

“Everyone has really enjoyed it; it is brighter than it used to be and adds a new element to the gym,” said Emerson.

The spacious gym is home to many climbers who train indoors during the winter months and hosts classes for kids on Fridays and bouldering leagues during the summer.
